LEGAL SYSTEM

Brunei's legal system is a unique combination of common law and the Islamic law (Sharia law). 

 

Common Law is based on principles of the United Kingdom’s common law and the doctrine of equity, Brunei applies statutes of general application from England, adapted to local circumstances and customs.

 

Sharia Law is the Islamic law in Brunei is derived from the Quran, hadith, qiyas (analogical reasoning), and ijma (consensus of opinion). It primarily applies to Muslims, although certain aspects may extend to non-Muslims in specific cases.
